A Two-day National Conference entitled ‘Energy Audit for Educational Institutions’ was organized by the Department of Life Sciences, K.C.College on 7th and 8th January, 2016. It aimed at bringing together planners, educational authorities and scientists with novel ideas for sustainable use of energy within educational institutions. The conference included lectures by stalwarts from energy sector and poster/working model exhibition for the young researchers and entrepreneurs to share their novel ideas with the participants. It also aimed at inspiring and motivating teachers and students to take up projects related to improving energy efficiency which can be used as an in-house technology and sharing it with other members of academia. The Conference focused upon three sub themes- Conservation of Electricity, Conservation of Water and Solid Waste Management. Participants presented papers and exhibited posters on Energy Conservation Strategies. Representatives from various educational institutions, university and NGOs participated in a panel discussion deliberating on pertinent issues related to Energy Audit. This two-day National Conference was sponsored by SiroClin Pharm and the media partner was Education Times.
The Inaugural Function of the Conference, held on 7th January, 2016 was graced by Chief Guest, Mr. Piyush Goyal, Hon'ble Minister of State with Independent charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy Resources and Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, was the Guest of Honour. The function was presided over by Mr. Niranjan Hiranandani, President of H(S) NC Board and hosted by Principal Ms. Manju Nichani. Other Board Members, Mr. Kishu Mansukhani and Mr. Anil Harish were amongst the dignitaries present during the function. Hon'ble Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal, in his speech, mentioned K.C.College being his alma mater and acknowledged K.C. being the first college to organize a conference on this important topic. The Hon’ble Minister spoke about a mobile application through which the number of cheap LED lamps being distributed can be tracked. He also emphasized upon the need for generating affordable energy solutions that could reach masses at the grass root level. Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh expressed his wish to make efforts in 'reaching the unreachable'. The Conference Proceedings were released by dignitaries during the Inaugural Function.
The plenary session included talks by eminent speakers such as renowned Environmentalist Dr. Sharad Chafekar, Dr. Subha Pandit; Principal, K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Vidyavuhar, Mumbai, Prof. Roshni Udyavar; Head, Rachana Sansad’s Institute of Environmental Architecture and Mr. Ashish Patil, Director at Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal (PDM),a Thane based NGO. Dr. Sharad Chafekar spoke about conservation of water and inculcating the habit among children. Roshni Udyavar highlighted the strategies for low carbon and low energy college buildings. Dr. Shubha Pandit emphasized on Energy Conservation & Energy Audit. She mentioned that energy audit involves activities which identify conservation opportunities, set targets and subsequently introduce measures to achieve the targets. Mr. Ashish Patil gave his talk on Use of Renewable Energy Resources in schools and colleges. Mr. Patil emphasized on alternatives for Renewable Energy Application like Biogas, Wood Gasification Systems and Solar Energy.
In this session the participants from various colleges and institutions presented their posters showcasing the work done in their colleges under themes such as "Save Water - the divine life-giving element of nature" from S.I.E.S. College of AS C, Ambernath, "Biocomposting- The new age mantra" and "Energy Audit: A method to optimize energy consumption" by Meetali Das Gupta from Gurunanak College of Arts, Science and Commerce. The working models were presented on "Simple lamp from Waste material" by Harishchand Nishad from Siddharth College and "Silk Leaf: Manmade leaf " by a student of K.C. (Junior) College. Dr. Hrishikesh Samant from St. Xavier's College and Dr. Sanjay Joshi from Somaiya College judged the posters. This was followed by a talk on 'Zero Garbage' by Dr. Neelima Kulkarni, Ex HOD, Department of Zoology, Vaze Kelkar College, currently associated with the NGO, Hariyali.
The participants, primarily faculty members from various colleges and institutions made oral presentations on various topics. The topics were "Conservation of Electricity in an Educational Institution" by Pravin Nayak and Kamlakar Indulkar from Jhunjhunwala College, "Going Solar" by presenters from SIES College, Ambernath, Thane, "Energy Audit – A need of an hour: Small step but big leap" by Prashant Ratnaparkhi from Xavier's College and so on. Oral Presentations were judged by Dr. Jyoti Palekar; Co- Founder and Managing Director, Stepsol and Dr. Ramesh Madav; Chairman and MD, Terracon.
Mr. O. P. Gupta, Controller General of Patent, Design and Trademark, acted as a facilitator and invited the panelist for their opinions and ideas related to Energy Conservation. Dr. R. Hande, Principal NSS College, Dr. Frazer Mascarenhas, Ex- Principal St Xavier’s college and presently Assistant Director of Reach Education Action Program (REAP), Dr. Leena Wadia, Senior Fellow at Observer Research Foundation and Mr. Vidyadhar Walavalkar, Quality Control Officer at Paper Products Ltd and an ardent member of Paryawaran Dakshata Mandal, Mumbai. The eminent personalities on the panel discussed "Energy Audit for Educational Institutions: Increasing Efficiency and Reducing Demand". Mr. O. P. Gupta summed up the discussion by saying that technology, if used wisely, will provide solutions for alternate energy usage and efficient ways of conserving precious sources of energy.
The Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function was Dr. Shailendra Deolankar, Joint Director of Higher Education, Mumbai Region. Winners of the Oral Presentation and Poster Competition were felicitated by our Principal, Ms. Manju Nichani and Dr. Shailendra Deolankar. The prize winners for Oral Presentation were Sheetal Pach- Pande from Bandodkar College and Pravin Nayak from Jhunjhunwala College for First and Second Prizes, respectively. In the Poster Category, The first prize went to Mr. Harishchand Nishad from Siddhartha College while the second and third prizes were won by Nakul Tukaram Patkar and Krutika Joshi from Somaiya College and Nupur Vishwakarma and her team from K.C.College, respectively. The Conference was a success in terms of bringing out innovative ideas for energy conservation. It was suggested that the changes in the architecture of the existing structure of institutions and cultural transformation in the mindset of all the stake holders are required to meet the energy needs of the organization
