SCINAPSE CLUB: SciCodE#25 -28th February 2025 – Inspirus and C.I.D (Chronic Investigation Drill)
SciCodE began in 2018 as an ambitious prospect by our esteemed visionary, Dr. Hemlata K. Bagla, Vice Chancellor of HSNC University. SciCodE#25 reflects the success of this endeavour as it shines bright today, under the organising committee- SCINAPSE CLUB of K.C College, represented by the Biotechnology and Microbiology departments collectively. It provides a platform for multifaceted events, where participants showcase their skills, talents, engrossing in a healthy competition that promotes growth and positivity.
Inspirus: – The event was an offline mode poster competition based on innovative biotechnology product ideas. The event was organized to promote innovative and novel strategies with futuristic product designs which are used for addressing potential problems of the society. Students were not only given a common platform to exhibit scientific product ideas but also provided with economic vision for the designed product. The event had 28 participants with the total entries of 19 posters.
C.I.D (Chronic Investigation Drill): The event aimed to enhance students’ problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and logical reasoning through an engaging and interactive mystery-solving activity. The event had an overwhelming student response with a count of 80 participants.
Outreach activities – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) visit
31th August 2024 The students were showcased with some of the facilities of TIFR and the research programs in their ‘Open Day. The students were accompanied by the faculty from science, pharmacy, medical and allied colleges of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The students gained knowledge on cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention through the posters.
Seminars – Popular Science Lecture organized in collaboration with Indian Women Scientist Association (IWSA) -16th July 2024
Dr. Vikrant Bhor on Harnessing the Microbiome: A new Frontier in the battle against multidrug resistance. The session was well-received and sparked engaging discussions among students and faculty.
Field Visit- Nature walk at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (6th July 2024)
About 44 Students along with the faculty members participated in a field visit and nature walk at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, aimed at exploring local biodiversity and gaining practical experience. The visit included observation of flora and fauna, understanding ecological interactions, and soil sampling for laboratory analysis. This hands-on activity enhanced students’ environmental awareness and field-based scientific skills.
Industrial visit at GO Cheese Farm
A one day visit was organized on 24th August 2024, 43 students along with 2 faculties visited the GO Cheese factory, cattle farm, and Parag Milk Foods, located in Manchar, Pune wherein demonstration and explanation were given for the Cow farm maintenance and Cheese making process. The intricacies of quality assessment and quality control within the dairy were shown to the students. The visit helped the students to understand how milk products are produced, processed, packaged and stored on a large scale. The students got an opportunity to introspect for the career prospects in the field of food technology.
Alumni Connect
The department hosts regular alumni interaction sessions, where former students share their professional experiences and offer valuable guidance to current batches. These talks foster mentorship, provide networking opportunities, and offer real-world perspectives on careers in industry, research, and higher education. Ms. Janice Shetty & Mr. Kamal Jain shared insights on pursuing a Master’s abroad and the importance of internships.
Faculty Training
The department actively encourages faculty members to participate in Faculty Development Programs (FDPs), workshops, and training initiatives aimed at enhancing teaching effectiveness, research capabilities, and administrative skills. Faculty members have participated in various FDPs covering a range of academic and professional skills, including:
Microsoft Excel for Data Management and Analysis
Focused on improving data handling efficiency, this FDP equipped faculty with practical skills in spreadsheet functions, data visualization, and basic analytics relevant to academic and research needs.
Grant Writing for Research
This FDP provided comprehensive guidance on writing effective research proposals, identifying funding opportunities, and understanding grant application procedures, thereby strengthening the department’s research culture.
Faculty Training
Training workshop on HPTLC was organized on 5th March 2022 and 19th March 2022 at Anchrom Enterprises Pvt Ltd. 16 Teachers from various colleges actively participated in workshop. The session was divided into presentation and demonstration of sample analysis using HPTLC.
Skill development
Department also conducted 2 hands on student’s training workshop on ‘16s-rRNA isolation’ and ‘ELISA’ on 8th March 2022 and 22nd March 2022 respectively. The students beneficiaries for the event were around 90 and 60 respectively.
Entrepreneurship Development
SY biotechnology students participated in an event on Unique products for entrepreneurship paper on 17/2/23. They made unique and useful products from the waste and laboratory equipments.
Industrial Visit II
An industrial visit to Lucknow-Nainital was arranged in the month of February 2024 for 6 days for 73 students along with 4 teachers from the departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology, The students got an opportunity to explore institutes such as IITR, Biotech park, CSIR-CDRI, Jim corbet museum etc.
Industrial Visit I
An industrial visit to Hyderabad was arranged in the month of January 2023 for 4 days for 92 students along with 5 teachers from the departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology, The students got an opportunity to explore institutes such as NIPER, CDFD,ICRISAT etc.
Seminar
Career-Counselling for studies in abroad’ session for all the students of Microbiology and Biotechnology was conducted by SI-UK company on 9/3/23.

Departmental annual event Inspirus-23 was held on 1st March 2023. Undergraduate students of the department presented their innovative ideas in poster Competition. Around 30 students participated. This year along with Inspirus there were other events also such as Z-maze and Bio-Jam organized by the department in collaboration with microbiology department.

Excellence in Basic Sciences in University of Mumbai on 26/08/22.

Outreach Activity II
Inspirus’19, an intercollegiate poster presentation event organized for the F.Y.B.Sc students, to ignite innovation and moral science in young and novice researchers.

The S.Y.B.Sc students (17) volunteered to make posters on topics of genetically modified crops, pollution and environment, and transgenic animals and present those to the students of S L & S S Girls’ High School (Kamlabai High School) to spread awareness on science and technology under the incharge of Ms. Prachi Bhatia (23rd December, 2019).
Field Visit II
The T.Y.B.Sc (37) and S.Y.B.Sc (29) students visited the Common Effluent Treatment Plant, MIDC, Kopar Khairane, to observe the different waste water treatment procedures under the in charge of Ms. Prachi Bhatia and Ms. Neha Manoti (7th December, 2019).
Field Visit I
The T.Y.B.Sc students (10) were invited for ACTREC’s Open day and given a tour of Tata Memorial Centre’s research labs under the incharge of Ms. Hajra Gupta (29th November, 2019).
Skill Development Program
The Departments of Biotechnology & Microbiology jointly organized a Three day Workshop on ‘Molecular and Immunological Diagnostic Techniques’ sponsored by Lady Tata Memorial Trust that witnessed S.Y.B.Sc student participation in hands on training in molecular biology techniques (10-12th July, 2019).
Faculty Development ProgramThe Departments of Biotechnology & Microbiology jointly organized a Three day Workshop on ‘Molecular and Immunological Diagnostic Techniques’ sponsored by Lady Tata Memorial Trust (10-12th July, 2019).
Entrepreneurship Development Program
The S.Y.B.Sc students (34) developed innovative useful products from waste and discarded items with the application of emerging simple science under the in charge of Ms. Hajra Gupta and Ms. Kulvinder Kaur.
Seminars
The department organized two talks from eminent scientists and experts in their field on Neuronal Crosstalk during Development by Dr. Shubha Tole. Neuroscientist, TIFR; and on Scientific Writing by Ms. Mugdha Ambatkar, Academic Editor, Scholarly Editing and Translation Services Pvt Ltd.
Faculty Training
Assistant Professors of the department, Ms. Hajra Gupta and Ms. Richa Shah, participated in a two day workshop on Gender and Science.
