Roll Take Turn 2023
Department of Mass Media, K.C college organized its annual documentary film festival ROLL.TAKE. TURN on February 13, 2023 with full vigor and packed house! The festival is instrumental in celebrating young talent, giving the students a platform to unleash their creativity. The films screened at the event were made by the final year BAMMC and BAFTNMP students. These films focus on contemporary issues as a part of their course and mentored by educationist and former CBFC member Prof. Nandini Sardesai, assisted by Dr. Vidhi Agrawal. The Vice Chancellor of HSNC University, Prof Dr. Hemlata Bagla and the KC College Principal Dr. Tejashree Shanbhag congratulated the students for the months of hard work that went into researching and making the films. The Chief Guest for the event Mr. Dalip Tahil praised the students’ craft and storytelling, while the judges Tunali Mukherjee, Ashish Sawhny and Shakti Pherwani provided insightful (read: incisive) feedback to each student group.
The films screened were based on societal issues ranging from commercialization of education, drag queens, domestic violence, euthanasia, and farmer’s suicide to the manifest power of drag as a socio-political force in India and the extent to which superstitious beliefs trump scientific temper.
Akhari Hal, the film featuring families of farmers in Aurangabad who had committed suicide was adjudged the best documentary. It tells the stories of the of family members – widowed wives, orphaned children forced to drop out of the school, and elderly parents in the aftermath of the suicide. That the arena of non-fiction is evolving was apparent in judges special mention to The Feather’s Pride, a documentary on drag queens of Mumbai and first runner up prize for the documentary on superstitions (Andhvishwas par Vishwas).
